Historic Photographs from the Oakland Museum

Wondering what that photo is to the right? Well it is Jack London Square as of 1952 with lots of cars parked where Barnes & Noble now stands. If you want to see more fascinating historic photographs like this Simon Waddington has put together a selection of photographs of the district found in the Oakland Museum online archive.

To see them just head over to the special exhibit "Historic Photographs of the Jack London District".

Oakland Waterfront Warehouse District

Waterfont Warehouse District GraphicThe Jack London District contains some of the oldest buildings in Oakland and in April 2000 the National Register of Historic Places added the Waterfront Warehouse District (#00000361) a 160 acre historic district which includes 31 buildings and one structure (Posey Tube Oakland Portal) of which 26 are contributing to the historic status.

The demolition of the United Grocers Warehouse in 2005 for the construction of the 428 Alice condominiums left 25 contributing buildings in the historic district. However the developer Pulte Homes was required to pay a $50,000 towards historic preservation of the district, and Signature Properties was also required to pay $25,000 for building at 288 Third St (an empty lot). This $75,000 has supported three preservation projects so far - renovation of the trash cans in the district that display information about many of the historic buildings, placing of 13 street signs designating the boundaries of the historic district, and development of a self-guided walking tour brochure.

More information about the buildings in the district can be found in the walking tour brochure which can be obtained from World Grounds Cafe (at 3rd and Alice) or directly from JLDA (email info@jlda.org). We hope to provide a downloadable copy of the brochure in the future. You may also click on the individual buildings show in the Historic District map on this page.
