Grocery shopping information map

There are currently very few places to buy groceries in the Jack London District as shown on the map above with green markers. We hope to update this map with the location of other grocery shopping locations close to the district that our community recommend.

The blue marker on the map above for "Site G" is so far the only proposed location for a grocery store in the District. Neighborhood input during the planning process for the Jack London Square Redevelopment got the City to add a condition of a approval for the project requiring them to include "at least 20,000sf of neighborhood serving retail" in the Site G garage. The City said it was not reasonable to require that it be a grocery, but it was clear at the time that this is what the community was looking for. Jack London Square partners said they would do their best to find one for the space, but that was several years ago.

Only our demonstrated demand for grocery shopping in the area can help that happen since in the absence of a clear profit opportunity the space will be filled with something else. The JLDA Board is currently making efforts to ensure the conditions of approval are acted on and that the developer does its best to bring an appropriate retail store to the location.

Grocery shopping information

We now have a page dedicated to grocery shopping information, both in an around the district. It also gives details of how we are hoping to attract a new grocery store operator to the district to serve our needs. We have one potential site, and even a grocery chain that is open new neighborhood serving stores in California - sounds like a perfect match? Well only if they know about our area and think there is a demand for a store. You can help suggest other locations and operators and perhaps we can make something happen!

See "Jack London District Grocery Shopping Information" to find out more.
